Episode Transcript
[00:00:01] Speaker A: Welcome to the Point after show with Kyle Maurer, Marshall hesla and Ian DeWitt. This is the show where the guys attempt to pick the winners of the weekly NFL games along with some healthy debate about current topics. Let's go.
[00:00:13] Speaker B: Let's go, baby.
[00:00:14] Speaker C: Let's go. Indeed. Hey, you guys. Happy to be here. Khaled, the master control right now because we're gonna go super speed, but we're.
[00:00:22] Speaker B: Not gonna talk super fast.
[00:00:24] Speaker C: We could talk really fast if we wanted to.
[00:00:26] Speaker B: Relatively trendy.
[00:00:27] Speaker A: I just want to talk normal.
[00:00:28] Speaker C: Yeah, okay. We're going to talk normal, but we're also going to give you a short pod this week. It's kind of our gift to you that we're going to give you an extra short, super delicious, concentrated taste of the point after this week because instead of taking a full buy because we don't have time to record this week, we're going to give you a super short episode. We're actually recording this during the halftime of the Lions and Vikings game that we are watching together.
[00:00:48] Speaker A: Watching Ian watch a football game is watching a sport.
[00:00:50] Speaker C: So we have to finish stressful for.
[00:00:52] Speaker B: You as it is for me.
[00:00:53] Speaker A: Did I look stressed on the couch?
[00:00:55] Speaker B: I mean, you looked pretty relaxed.
[00:00:56] Speaker C: You had your feet put up.
[00:00:57] Speaker A: I was chilling. You didn't stress me out that bad.
[00:01:00] Speaker C: It's amazing. I love it.
[00:01:01] Speaker A: What's your question of the day?
[00:01:02] Speaker C: Question of the day. 2024 is behind us. We've started a brand new year. 2025. Hello, 2025. How are you? Personal highs and lows of the 2024 year. Let's take a quick look back and do the old.
What do you call it?
[00:01:19] Speaker A: The old music.
[00:01:21] Speaker C: Yeah. Thank you. There you go. Let's take a look back in my bros. What were some of your personal highs and personal lows in the short time we have together?
[00:01:30] Speaker B: Personal high?
I don't know if. So 2024 was relatively uneventful, which maybe is a good thing because not a lot of bad things happen.
[00:01:41] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:01:41] Speaker B: But nothing like super crazy happened. Y. I will say personal high would be just like watching Casey go to preschool for the first time.
[00:01:52] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:01:53] Speaker B: She's in school and just watching her learn a lot. It.
[00:01:57] Speaker A: Honestly, she asked all the questions.
[00:01:59] Speaker B: She has a lot of questions. But on top of that, like, just. She has grown so much, she can, like, even attempt to write her name right now, which is kind of crazy. And to think that she would have been doing that at the beginning of the year. I didn't. I didn't have that for Me and I was. We were very nervous about preschool because she was not completely potty trained when she started, and she's been. She's been crushing it. And that's a high for me. I love that.
[00:02:22] Speaker C: There's nothing like the.
[00:02:23] Speaker A: The.
[00:02:23] Speaker C: The pride. The.
A different kind of pride.
[00:02:27] Speaker A: Pride of the lion.
[00:02:28] Speaker C: Yeah. The fatherhood bride. As your child, your daughter's at a fun age. Like, things are just interesting the more they learn and the funny things that they begin to say. It's.
[00:02:39] Speaker B: It's my first parent teacher conference, which.
[00:02:42] Speaker A: Was not the teacher as.
[00:02:43] Speaker B: Not the teacher, which was strange.
[00:02:46] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:02:46] Speaker A: What was your low?
[00:02:47] Speaker B: My low, because it did technically happen in 2024, was the Lions losing the NFC championship game.
[00:02:56] Speaker C: It could have been your high that the Lions made it to the conference championship.
That's a high.
[00:03:02] Speaker A: At half.
[00:03:03] Speaker B: They're leading by four right now. Oh, no, there was 27. Was it 27 to three or 21? I think it was 27 to three. God or. No, it was 277.
[00:03:13] Speaker A: That's crazy.
[00:03:14] Speaker C: @ halftime.
[00:03:15] Speaker B: And they. They had a lot of opportunities to put that game away.
[00:03:18] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:03:19] Speaker B: They didn't do it. I don't want to revel on that too much.
[00:03:21] Speaker C: Y sure.
[00:03:22] Speaker B: Still stings.
[00:03:23] Speaker A: I'll say. For me, my personal high. Just a couple, like, work situations that, like, I can't be really specific about, but, you know, feeling a little bit more secure in my job.
But honestly, I really hated 2024. Like, people have asked me like that and. And I hated it. I was septic, in the hospital for a week. I had knee surgery. I had to learn how to walk again. I'm still having complications. I hated it. Like, physically, I hated it. Yeah, it. It was awful. So, like, I don't look at it and say, like, yeah, that was really great. Like, no, that really hurt. Like, yeah. I'll probably look back on some things and say I learned from it, But I hated 2024. And I don't.
Yeah. Like, the good thing was work, and Notre Dame has a chance to win a national championship, but a chance not an actual yet.
[00:04:14] Speaker C: Right.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: Maybe next year's good thing will be Notre Dame maybe winning. But I. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer. I did not like this year, personally. Wow.
[00:04:23] Speaker B: Not every year is a one that people want to reflect on all the time.
[00:04:27] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:28] Speaker B: Being honest.
[00:04:28] Speaker C: Yeah. It's a reminder. All of us are going through very different things every single year. Very different. Very, very different things.
[00:04:35] Speaker A: I just got a call from a parent before I came Here, just of one of some of the struggles their kids have. And, And I sent an email out to our staff and was like, hey, some of the kids that we're going to see, they don't. They didn't have three meals every day.
[00:04:47] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:48] Speaker A: You know, they didn't get to go to Travers City for Christmas break. Like.
[00:04:52] Speaker C: Right.
[00:04:53] Speaker A: So Grace is expected in all formats. Kyle, how about you? Yeah, good, bad.
[00:04:58] Speaker C: Appreciate that. That's. Thank you guys for sharing. And this year it's harder for me to. I'm like one of those unusual people. I think that I don't remember the negatives quite as much. I tend to think that the human condition is such that most of us normally dwell on the negatives a lot more and they're more salient in our memories. But for me, I struggle to think of the really low lows throughout this year. There were definitely challenging times.
The life that my wife and I signed up for, it wasn't like kind of this life on easy mode. But I can't.
I can't think of really great low examples.
[00:05:39] Speaker A: Great low.
[00:05:40] Speaker C: There were. Yeah, there were some work challenges that put a lot of stress on me, both with my day job and my little side business. Some big setbacks. You know, I had high goals that I set for this year. Some of those were not attainable due to circumstances partially outside of my control.
And work got pretty intense and pretty stressful, put a lot of pressure on me personally and affected my personal life. And I'm hoping that this coming year is not quite affecting my personal life to the same degree. I'd like to be able to focus a lot more on my personal life and my personal hobbies and my personal podcasts.
[00:06:18] Speaker A: You went through the ringer this year, I think, with some things. So it's interesting hearing you say that. You can't feel like that because not like you're a complainer. That's not what I mean. But the day to day, it. You're always going. Yeah, you're always going. And it's. It's an interesting, like, dynamic as somebody who's single with, you know, lives by myself in a home. But you're. I'm on 800 students and then at 3 o'clock I can just not talk to anybody. You don't have that right here. To task mode at home.
[00:06:50] Speaker C: It's true.
[00:06:51] Speaker A: Task mode of cleanup and then go to bed.
[00:06:53] Speaker C: It's. And we're all. Again, we're all. We all go through different, very different things. But yeah, what the.
[00:06:57] Speaker A: Engaging to hear you say that you can't think of one. When I've heard. I could. I could list you 10 of yours if you had.
[00:07:03] Speaker C: If you had me list the top thousand. I could, you know, like, we could. I could do that. But the top one, like, I don't know, like every day is a super. Is a struggle.
[00:07:12] Speaker B: What about the high.
[00:07:14] Speaker C: The highs? There's a couple that I thought of that are fun. The first, personally, my. My wife and I celebrate our 15th anniversary.
[00:07:20] Speaker B: That's pretty big.
[00:07:21] Speaker C: 15Th wedding anniversary. Thank you. Thank you. For this summer in July and. And for that occasion, we took a trip, the two of us. We spent a few nights in New York City, which we've never been to.
[00:07:33] Speaker B: That's pretty dope.
[00:07:34] Speaker C: It was very cool. It was very cool. And you know, you go to Moe's Diner. No, I don't know if you know this. There's a lot of things to do in New York City. And, and we did about.
[00:07:47] Speaker A: You did that long walk, half a percent. You walked like, was it like 15 or 20 miles in one day?
[00:07:53] Speaker C: We did, we did exceed our previous records. Like, I think our last record was like about 10 years ago. We went to San Francisco and we did whatever, 22, 000 steps in a day or something along those steps. We beat that. We beat that. Both days that we were full days we were in New York City.
[00:08:08] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:08:08] Speaker C: You know, so going around to. Across the Brooklyn Bridge and up.
[00:08:12] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, they walked over the whole bridge.
[00:08:14] Speaker C: Over the bridge and then the Central park the next day.
[00:08:17] Speaker A: I wouldn't even worry.
[00:08:19] Speaker C: All those things. Oh, it was a great experience. So the 15th anniversary, first time in NYC. And then before that, I attended the NFL draft in Detroit.
[00:08:29] Speaker B: That's right. That's right. I did get to go to that.
[00:08:31] Speaker C: That is a special thing on my calendar. I feel like I've been there.
[00:08:35] Speaker A: What is it? Sketch.
[00:08:37] Speaker C: There's a famous streamer I had never heard of.
[00:08:39] Speaker B: Well, you briefly bumped into Pat McAfee.
[00:08:42] Speaker C: Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes. I've recognized him. And my jaw dropped like he walked right by. As close as you guys are to me. Oh, just moseying about. Yes. There's famous people all over the place. But the people that I was with were most enamored with this random YouTube or not YouTube Twitch streamer that I'd never heard of. The guy, the one who holds up a finger and says, brother, never.
[00:09:04] Speaker B: I still don't know who this guy.
[00:09:06] Speaker C: He was getting swarmed with crowds of people who were dropping.
[00:09:09] Speaker A: This was huge, though. You loved It.
[00:09:11] Speaker C: It was very cool.
[00:09:12] Speaker B: It was very well done by Detroit.
[00:09:14] Speaker C: Oh, my God.
[00:09:14] Speaker A: The crowds were intense attended.
[00:09:16] Speaker C: It was a freezing cold day. And then the whole city came. Everybody was there. What an experience. I. You had to see it to believe it. So it was a good high. And, you know, it doesn't come around very often. So to say that I was there when it came.
[00:09:31] Speaker B: Speaking of the giraffe.
[00:09:33] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:09:33] Speaker B: We have a new number one pick. It was the Patriots. It's the Tennessee Titans. Patriots.
[00:09:38] Speaker C: The Titans have their first pick.
[00:09:39] Speaker B: Now they pick because the Patriots won and then promptly fired their head coach.
[00:09:44] Speaker C: Oh, man. I feel for drama.
[00:09:46] Speaker A: I don't think he got home.
[00:09:47] Speaker B: Is that the first.
[00:09:48] Speaker A: He couldn't have been fired before he got home.
[00:09:51] Speaker C: That's crazy.
[00:09:51] Speaker B: Is that the first time that a coach has been fired immediately after a game like that?
[00:09:55] Speaker A: They fired Lane Kiffin on the bus before he got on the flight and couldn't get on the flight with usc.
[00:10:02] Speaker B: Jeez.
[00:10:03] Speaker A: Back in the day. Or it was either us.
[00:10:05] Speaker B: It doesn't happen very often where someone gets fired just like done. Word on the street is they were looking for. For Mike Vrabel.
[00:10:13] Speaker A: Well, they're. They're seeing that the jets and the Browns are interested in interviewing him and they're like, well, we're going to lose our chance. We're firing him right now.
[00:10:21] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:10:22] Speaker C: It's so crazy that the reports. A lot of the top candidates are previously fired.
[00:10:26] Speaker B: But this is the funny thing we were talking about how firing a coach after a year just seems asinine to me.
[00:10:34] Speaker A: Is that your one big takeaway from this week firing will be your one takeaway because we're going to, like, speed our pot up because we want to get up for second half, but we want to give you guys a little tidbit from the week. So hit us with your one thing. All right.
[00:10:47] Speaker B: My one takeaway would be Mike Tomlin. Congrats. You have yet another playoff appearance and another winning season.
[00:10:58] Speaker A: Winning season. Justin, your over.
[00:11:00] Speaker B: Your team is going to get bounced right out of the playoffs because your team sucks.
[00:11:04] Speaker A: Who are they playing?
[00:11:06] Speaker B: Are they going against LA1? So they're. I think they're playing Baltimore again.
[00:11:10] Speaker A: I. I think they're all playing Baltimore. Yeah.
[00:11:13] Speaker B: And so they're gonna. They're gonna lose first round.
[00:11:16] Speaker C: They beat the Ravens early in the season.
[00:11:18] Speaker B: Look up really quick because normally I'd have this stat ready to go. When was the Steelers last playoff win? It's been a while.
[00:11:26] Speaker C: It's been like, it was like 2015 or 16 or something like that. Because I think that this is why I want to open up.
[00:11:32] Speaker B: I'm excited to open up our little capsule at the end of this season just to talk about some of our takes, because I did say this was going to happen. I also threw in there Mike Tomlin or John Harbaugh was going to get Jim Harbaugh.
[00:11:44] Speaker C: You said John. Yeah.
[00:11:45] Speaker B: Was going to get fired. But obviously Mike Tomlin's not going to get fired. Fired.
[00:11:50] Speaker C: Right.
[00:11:51] Speaker B: But this is the exact thing that happens every single year.
[00:11:56] Speaker C: It's pretty incredible teams. It's pretty incredible. He's money in the bank like Mike Evans.
[00:12:00] Speaker B: But at the same time, it's just like, at what point are you gonna spice this team up? Like, you gotta. You can't be stuck in limbo. They're stuck in limbo.
[00:12:09] Speaker C: Yeah, they're stuck.
[00:12:10] Speaker B: They need to do something. I don't know what it is. They need to do something.
[00:12:14] Speaker C: Yeah. That's my take on a lot of teams.
[00:12:16] Speaker A: 2008.
[00:12:17] Speaker B: 2008.
[00:12:18] Speaker C: That was their last playoff win.
[00:12:19] Speaker A: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. 2016.
[00:12:22] Speaker C: Okay. Thank you.
[00:12:22] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:12:22] Speaker A: They lost in the conference championship.
[00:12:24] Speaker C: Okay. Right, right, right, right.
[00:12:25] Speaker B: But still, that's a hot minute ago.
[00:12:28] Speaker A: That's crazy. I mean, right here, it says that between 2015 and 2025, they've only won three playoff games.
[00:12:37] Speaker C: Yeah. Dang.
[00:12:39] Speaker B: I know. They're like the. Everyone, like, hangs the hat on the. The nothing but winning seasons, but it's.
[00:12:45] Speaker A: Just like, why do we hang hats, by the way?
Can you look that up while we talk about our biggest.
That.
[00:12:53] Speaker B: Marshall, what's your big takeaway?
[00:12:55] Speaker A: My big takeaway? Well, selfishly, I hit on a few bets when it came to the old incentive clauses. There's nothing better than finding something on Twitter that says, this guy needs one tackle and he's going to get $400,000. And I'm like, hm. I'll profit $20 off of that and call it good. So, selfishly, that was one of my favorite things. And then I guess if I'm looking at. In terms of football, Tyreek Hill is saying he wants out of Miami, and he has had more kids bor year than touchdown catches.
[00:13:27] Speaker C: Wow.
[00:13:28] Speaker A: Five kids born, four touchdown catches.
[00:13:30] Speaker C: That is nuts. Nuts.
[00:13:32] Speaker B: And you can hang your hat on that, which means you're gonna. You're gonna properly keep its shape, preventing damage by allowing it to air out.
[00:13:41] Speaker A: Oh, I'm letting that take air out.
[00:13:44] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:13:45] Speaker A: We're gonna see. Jamie says that the Chiefs might request a trade form, which wouldn't it be really funny for them to get him back?
[00:13:51] Speaker C: No way. Wow. That would be super fun.
[00:13:53] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:13:54] Speaker A: That's what Jamie wants. At least Kyle, hit us with your one thing for the football week. Can't be Notre Dame beating Georgia. I already talked about that.
[00:14:00] Speaker C: Oh, yeah. Gosh darn, you took that from me.
Let's see. The thing that I was thinking about the most this weekend was Lamar just. I got to be honest, I know that we're getting called out for talking about him too much.
[00:14:15] Speaker B: I sometimes go to bed thinking about Lamar, but, I mean, I. I didn't.
[00:14:18] Speaker C: Get to watch a ton of football, but I did. I did catch a lot of that game and some of some others, and Stu. And it's just like watching it thinking like, oh my God, this is. This is just. This is just crazy. And like the. The announcers commenting on the game were doing the same thing, gushing. Just. He's in a club of one. You know, he founded the. The 4900 Club. Like, there's no one else in that club but him. And it's so crazy. Like, he's already just. What he's doing is historic this. Like, he's already surpassed Michael Vick's records over his much longer career in a lot less time. You know, if there's anybody who's earned his money in. In their life, I think it's this guy. It's pretty wild to see. And as I. The thought that I was having is the best comparison in a. In terms of like passing I see in a season is like all the time I spent watching Aaron Rodgers. And as I'm watching Aaron Rodgers go out this week to maybe play his last game. And I did catch a little bit of that jets game and saw him, you know, get his 500th passing touchdown and stuff and another one to Devonte and to Lazard and so on and generally have a pretty decent game, which is. Might be his last one.
And now I see like the next like the. The air apparent in terms of passing is somehow this guy that we didn't really consider an elite passer several years ago. And now Bryce Young now, of course, of course. But like his touchdown to interception ratio, the fact that he's thrown four picks this year and none of them were his fault. None of them. All four of those went through the receivers. They were perfectly placed balls. They went through the receiver's hand and won a receiver stopped on their route. Like, I've never heard of anything like this.
[00:16:04] Speaker A: I actually would like us somebody to cut up. You just going.
Because that's what I feel like I watch. That's what I feel like I do when I watch.
[00:16:12] Speaker C: I will say, how did he get this good?
[00:16:15] Speaker B: Just to kind of wrap up our conversation. The last thing I will say to kind of add on to this, I thought for sure Josh Allen was going to be the MVP just with the way the narrative was and how he was playing. But when the end of the season comes and they're going to put those stats next to each other, Lamar is going to win it.
[00:16:32] Speaker A: He should.
[00:16:33] Speaker B: He's going to win it. He's got the numbers.
[00:16:36] Speaker C: I will be shocked if he doesn't.
[00:16:37] Speaker A: But I would consider it weird. Stunned. If anybody besides Josh Allen gets the mvp. Stunned.
Stunned.
[00:16:45] Speaker B: Oh, you think Josh.
[00:16:46] Speaker A: Josh Allen's gonna get it? Lamar should. I think Lamar.
It's voter fatigue.
[00:16:52] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I tend to think you're right.
[00:16:55] Speaker A: MVP Nash shouldn't have two of them. Like, it's. It's a narrative. So.
[00:17:01] Speaker C: But I think that you're right and it's just going to be weird. It's going to be one of those, like, remember when Lamar had like this historic season and like no pigs, yada yada, blah, blah, and they gave it to somebody else.
It's okay. I'm actually, I'm happy for Josh Allen.
[00:17:15] Speaker A: But anyway, can you believe it's been three years since Antonio Brown took his shirt and jersey off?
[00:17:20] Speaker C: Holy moly.
[00:17:21] Speaker B: Three years.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: Three years.
[00:17:23] Speaker C: Feels like it was yesterday.
[00:17:24] Speaker A: Uber driver was on a podcast. I listened to the next day.
It's a pretty sick interview.
[00:17:31] Speaker C: Wow. Was he shirtless in the Uber? Yeah. No way.
Oh, my gosh. That's funny.
We got to wrap up because we got to go watch the football, you guys. But listeners, we love you and we wanted to make sure you got something in earphones this week. We're going to be back next week. Previewing.
No, not previewing. We're going to try offs.
[00:17:50] Speaker B: Will be all done by then.
[00:17:50] Speaker C: Recapping the first round of the playoffs. Sorry, you don't get a full preview.
[00:17:54] Speaker B: Some of these teams will be done. We won't be talking about. We won't be talking about the packers much longer.
[00:18:00] Speaker C: Kind of rude. Kind of rude. All right, let's wrap this up.
[00:18:04] Speaker A: We want to thank you for listening to Point after for listening to this short little tidbit. If you like a short form podcast of this, let us know. Be interested to see what your guys feedback is compared to some of our hour or hour plus podcasts that we do. Did you like it a little shorter, let us know. Hope you guys have a good rest of your week. Stay safe. Tell somebody you love them. Bye.
